{"id":27881,"date":"2020-04-04T10:42:16","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T10:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/epeka.si\/?p=27881"},"modified":"2023-12-10T10:35:48","modified_gmt":"2023-12-10T10:35:48","slug":"pregnancy-childbirth-and-infant-care-during-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epeka.si\/en\/pregnancy-childbirth-and-infant-care-during-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Pregnancy, childbirth and infant care during COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">April, 2020<br \/>Roma Station<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Ljubljana Gynaecology Clinic has prepared recommendations that may come in handy for all pregnant women and new mothers among you:<!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>NOSOCITY<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are currently few data on the course of COVID-19 in pregnancy.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mild disease course.<\/strong> The data so far available indicate that pregnant women are not at higher risk than the general population, but special attention is needed for pregnant women with associated diseases. There are currently no reports of deaths in pregnant women due to COVID-19. The illness in pregnant women usually presents with signs of mild influenza\/cold, mainly cough, fever and shortness of breath.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>There is no evidence that the virus passes to the foetus in pregnancy.<\/strong> Amniotic fluid, placenta, umbilical cord, throat swabs from newborns and breast milk from infected pregnant women have been tested, all negative for the virus. There is currently no evidence of genital transmission.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Impact on the foetus.<\/strong> No data on increased risk of miscarriage. As there is no evidence of transmission of the virus to the foetus in utero, the possibility of foetal birth defects due to the virus is unlikely.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In case of acute COVID-19 infection in pregnancy,<\/strong> pregnant women should follow the officially published recommendations. A gynaecological examination 14 days after the end of the infection is advised.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In view of the COVID-19 epidemic, healthy pregnant women should not arbitrarily skip examinations and should follow the instructions of their personal gynaecologists.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>CHILDBIRTH<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notify local maternity clinics.<\/strong> We recommend that women with signs of infection and the onset of labour notify the local maternity hospital in advance of their arrival.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mode of delivery.<\/strong> COVID-19 should not affect the mode of delivery. The exception is a respiratory condition of the pregnant woman that requires urgent completion of the pregnancy.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Obstetric analgesia.<\/strong> COVID-19 infection is not a contraindication to epidural analgesia and spinal anaesthesia, but fever is a contraindication. The use of a nitrous oxide (N2O) mask is also contraindicated.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Delayed umbilical cord transection.<\/strong> According to current data, delayed cord clamping is still recommended. The child should be wiped and cared for as usual.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BREASTFEEDING<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Breastfeeding is advised.<\/strong> There is no evidence to date of transmission of the virus via breast milk to the infant. Current data suggest that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risk of transmission, and breastfeeding is therefore advised.
