A year ago we piloted the concert series Classics Today? Tomorrow? and began the search for the placement of classical music in contemporary time and space. The search has only really begun with three concerts, so this year we are launching the second edition of the series, where we will open some new boxes with an expanded programme.

Where does classical music fit in today? Exclusively in concert halls? Churches? To weddings? Festivals? Clubs? Elevators? Shops? Does it belong anywhere else? And in what form? Strictly evening, glitzy, with choice words, fine wine? Original, as it once was, or is modernisation allowed? Is it only desirable? Sensible?<\/p>\n
Classical music, in the whirlwind of modern times, finds itself in a crisis of its once steely identity. It is as if it had fallen into a mixture of elitism, conservatism and time-consuming pedantry. The “instant” age, with its information suf\ufb01ciency, seems to have a hard time processing art, which requires a little more attention, time and reflection in its treatment.<\/p>\n
But even classical music is still – after all – music! And in its very being, one of the functions of art is, after all, entertainment. Much of the classical repertoire was, and still is, written with this very purpose in mind. Technical perfection, virtuosity of performance and aesthetic and confessional contribution are the additions that only reinforce the basic purpose.<\/p>\n
The Classics Today? tomorrow? series is intended as proof that the curiosity of the individual is more than enough to enjoy classical music. It presents young, adventurous performers in less conventional ensembles who bring freshness and novelty to the classical scene, without neglecting the importance of quality performance and programme choice.<\/p>\n
This year’s cycle has been expanded in many ways, both in style and location. This time, we have invited musicians from the world of classical music, who apply their knowledge and thinking in a wide variety of styles. Even those that are, by definition, the opposite of serious music. The two concerts are set in the Minorite Church, which has already proved to be a wonderful setting for concerts of this kind last year. And twice we will enjoy the legendary “Cultural and Musical Den” or Klub KGB in Maribor, where the music will resound in a relaxed basement-bar atmosphere.<\/p>\n

\nIt was 2006 when a young music enthusiast, Aleksander \u010con\u010d, still a high school student at the time, started to realise the idea of an orchestra consisting exclusively of brass instruments. Brass Band Slovenia is considered to be the first ensemble of its kind in Slovenia. It is composed mainly of music students and academically trained musicians. Their enthusiasm and youthful enthusiasm are well supported by the virtuosity of the participating musicians, creating an energetic, dynamic and sonically full concert experience. They will present a varied programme entitled “Musical Mosaic”, which, in addition to classical music, also includes film music and excerpts from the most famous musicals.<\/p>\n

\n“Theatre Music” is the title of the fresh album from the broader “More Than Just Sax” concept. The idea grew out of the musical garden of Simon \u0160irec, a classically trained saxophonist, who in his artistic endeavours persistently travels beyond the boundaries of individual genres. Recently, his creations have increasingly explored popular and electronic music, in which he has been steadily incorporating the knowledge he acquired through his studies in classical music. Despite the musical complexity, the performances of the young musician from Dolenjska remain very relaxed and likeable. Simon is considered an eternal innovator, a daring experimenter, but at the same time he does not compromise on the quality of his music.<\/p>\n

\nHans Peter and Rudi from the Austrian part of Carinthia bring musical freshness with a combination of accordion and saxophone. The combination is rather atypical, but it allows the musicians to explore new sonic avenues. Stylistically, they move somewhere between “Tango nuevo”, jazz and the melodies heard in musicals. In this way, the musicians have created a sound that is characteristic of them, which they develop to the greatest extent, especially in their original compositions. They also perform works by well-known composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Hermeto Pascoal, Gerald Preinfalk, etc. Improvised works add an extra touch of freshness to their programme. The duo has been active since 2012 and released their debut album “First Inspiration” in 2016.<\/p>\n

\nVivus means to be alive, to be alive! Though often overshadowed by chamber ensembles such as string quartets and piano trios, the wind quintet is not far behind in musical attractiveness. It boasts a variety of sound colours, rich wind dynamics and the audacity to explore the literature of lesser-known composers. The Vivus International Quintet started its activities in August 2017. It premiered at the European Forum Alpbach in Austria. This was followed by performances as part of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz’s subscription concerts (Zusammenspiel +, Spiegelungen and Take Six in Vienna), a radio recording with the Austrian broadcaster \u00d61, a silver plaque at the international Svirel competition and a concert as part of the Ljubljana Festival.<\/p>\n
