On the occasion of World Roma Day, we are preparing a round table on the employment of young Roma men and women in the past and today.

This year marks a very special year, as it is exactly 50 years since the First World Roma Congress, which took place in London. One of the initiators of the congress came from the area of today’s Serbia, the poet, and writer Slobodan Berberski. He declared at the congress as chairman: “We are a nation, not gypsies.”

The First World Roma Congress, held from 8 to 12 April 1971 in London, marks a turning point in the international integration of the Roma, who then for the first time politically shaped their program and on the first day of the Congress designated 8 April as an international Roma holiday – Roma Day. They defined the symbols of their nation: the anthem (the song Djelem, djelem), the flag (a tricolor of green, blue and red with a bicycle as a Roma symbol) and determined the name “Roma” to indicate belonging to their nation. During the discussion, the congress participants emphasized that their goal is not a single state (“Romanistan”), but the unity and respect of the Roma people in the countries in which they live. The Congress began collecting data on Roma as victims of the Holocaust during World War II.

This year, on the occasion of the World Roma Day, the Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent., planned to hold several events, including a concert by Vlado Kreslin, which has been postponed to a later date, when the organization of public music events will be possible again.

As part of the project With youth work against youth unemployment – Fair employment, this year we will organize a round table on the topic of employment of young Roma men and women in the past and today, with the support of the online platform Zoom. We will focus on employment problems, the importance of education and gender equality, as well as the emergence of COVID 19 and how the pandemic affects employment today.

The head of the Fair employment project Miha Kager, president of the Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent., Štefan Simončič, Employment office Maribor social worker Suzana Kotnik, volunteer at the project Amanda Fetahi and other members of the Roma ethnic minority from Maribor will talk about this. The round table will be moderated by Anja Cehnar.

You are cordially invited and invited on April 8, 2021 at 11 a.m.
