Discussion: Why is independence denied to young people?
September 15, 2025, at 7 p.m.
Tyrševa ulica 15, Maribor
The Association EPEKA will continue to conduct a cycle of workshops, lectures and discussions in 2025 as part of Living Problems of Youth or Youth Autonomy program.
The purpose of the entire program will be to facilitate the transition to adult life for young people, also by empowering them to be independent in the area of housing. The meetings will be aimed at gaining knowledge, exchanging experiences and understanding the key challenges that young people face in becoming independent. Through a variety of content, we will provide young people with insight into practical procedures, financial aspects, alternative options and the broader social contexts of housing conditions.
The discussion Why is independence denied to young people will address key questions about why young people have difficulty achieving economic and housing independence. We will discuss the impact of the labor market situation, precariousness, wage stagnation, and the lack of affordable housing. Participants will be able to share their personal experiences, which will serve as a starting point for a broader discussion on systemic barriers. We will also discuss the impact of family expectations, cultural norms, and social pressures that make it difficult for young people to leave home. We will pay special attention to the question of how housing insecurity affects the psychological well-being of young people. In the final part, we will jointly formulate proposals for changes that would enable young people to become more independent and have more stable living conditions in the long term.
Due to the limited number of places, we ask you to register in advance at epeka@epeka.si or in person. The activity is co-financed by the City of Maribor and the Slovenian Youth Office.
