On the occasion of International Beaver Day, we invite you to join us for a walk on Maribor Island, where we will explore together with young people the importance of the beaver for the natural environment and river ecosystems.

The beaver is an exceptionally interesting animal species that has an important impact on aquatic and riparian habitats through its way of life. By building dams, digging burrows and reshaping the landscape, it creates conditions for many other species. Its presence can increase the diversity of habitats, help retain water in the landscape and draw attention to the importance of healthy rivers, streams, wetlands and riverbanks.

The event will be designed as a walk, observation and discussion in nature. Young people will participate in preparing the content, researching interesting facts about the beaver and developing questions for participants. EPEKA youth workers will act as facilitators, encouraging young people to research, observe their surroundings and connect knowledge with direct experience in the environment.

During the walk, we will reflect on why river ecosystems are important, how humans interfere with water spaces and why the return of the beaver to many environments often raises questions of coexistence. We will discuss how we can better understand the needs of wild animals, how to recognise signs of their presence and why learning to observe is an important first step in nature protection.

Maribor Island is a valuable natural area close to the city, making it an excellent opportunity to discuss the relationship between urban life, recreation and nature protection. During the activity, young people will be invited to record observations, photograph natural details and reflect on how we can use natural spaces respectfully.

The event is intended for young people, families and everyone interested in nature along the Drava River, the life of beavers and the importance of river habitats for the future of the city.

🎯 Participation is free of charge, but the number of places is limited – register as soon as possible!
