Maribor
The Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent., is a part of the Festival of Photography Maribor, which will this year be presented in 26 different venus, where you’ll be able to see 30 exhibitions.
All of the events will additionally be accompanied by the workshops, guided tours of exhibitions and movie projections and that’s a novelty this year. Festival of Photography in Maribor is extremely diverse as we will walk through different landscapes which will evoke in us different feelings and wishes to give back to nature its richness.
Exhibition by Mišo Hochstätter is raising awareness on industrial pollution through collage series. Our unhealthy attitude to Earth has led to dramatic and aesthetically pleasing photographies by Bojan Golčar, who leaves a physical imprint in his pictures much like humans leave an imprint on the natural space. Photographic answers of where our reckless interventions may lead us are presented to us by Sissa Micheli; Aoelian Islands remind her of post-apocalyptic state in which we will be forced to survive in extreme conditions.
Question of reality is contemplated by DK (Damjan Kocjančič) who persuades us that through photographies we have traveled the entire world, even though we have only moved in the radius 100 meters around his studio. While Ana Kučan is taking pictures in the park of the castle Versailles and contrasts baroque gardening to the current attitude towards the old parks. Contrast between “now” and “then” is also pursued by the photographer Imre Szabo who took pictures of battlefields in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. Author begs the question if we have learnt any lessons in the past and if ready to retake the exam in the future. Similar question is also addressed by a photographer Sebastiao Salgado who will be presented in the movie Salt of the Earth. Even though he has witnessed numerous tragedies, he’s managed to restore his hope in the world.
A longer period of time has been captured in the retrospective exhibition by Stojan Kebler, also including the broadest overview of his work. As a member of the avantgard photography group the Maribor Circle he will be presented alongside other members in a documentary on the phenomenon of the Maribor Circle photography.
In continuation you can hear the thoughts of the curator of the festival Vasja Nagy.
Svet – svetloba / World in light / Die Welt im Licht
This year’s edition of the Photography Festival in Maribor is dedicated to landscape and environment. The exhibitions, which represent mainly the contemporary artistic treatment of this theme, will shed light on it from different angles. Photographic techniques, formal and conceptual challenges, ecology, politics, science, imagination, as well as the very definition of motif within the art historical discipline are all very topical subjects, which are dealt with by artists and experts as well as the general public.
One of the most common motifs in photography is the landscape, whether it is a view from nature or of man-made places, i.e. architecture. Architecture in this case represents a cultural landscape, that is, a landscape that is a web of imagination and the possibility of material realisation. Culture and Nature were two clearly identifiable and distinct categories in the perception of the world not so long ago, perhaps even 200 years ago. Culture has steadily encroached on nature to the point where some scientists have labelled the current geological period the Anthropocene, as it has become clear that human activity is influencing global processes.
But nature is also intruding into culture all the time. It was once thought that nature should be tamed and that man’s intellect could tame it, but it has been shown time and again, even if only by a dandelion blade in the middle of a tarmac car park, just how thin a layer human consciousness and the activity that arises from it is. Moreover, nature has swollen so much that it is already beyond the limits of the visible universe. Nature, the wild, the unconscious, whatever we call it, invades again and again through the smallest cracks and also forcefully and destructively all over the place.
