As many of us use vending machines for food and drink, it is worthwhile to give some guidance on how to use them safely during the COVID-19 epidemic.

We need to be aware that vending machines, especially the buttons, flaps and door handles, are often heavily contaminated because they are touched by large numbers of people. It is the responsibility of vending machine owners to disinfect them regularly, but it is also the responsibility of the users. If a disinfectant is available at the machine, the user must disinfect their hands before entering the number for the product selected, enter the product code and disinfect their hands again before removing the product from the machine. The user may also use disposable gloves. If neither disinfectant nor gloves are available, a clean handkerchief or paper towel may be used as a last resort and discarded after use.

Keep hands that have touched potentially contaminated surfaces off the face, especially the mouth, nose and eyes, and wash them at the first opportunity. Treat food from shops and vending machines properly when you get home. The NIJz has produced guidance on food handling.
