An Olympic sport that combines strategy, precision and team spirit – curling – is returning to Maribor.

As part of the event Curling Returns to Maribor, an open day will take place, intended for all generations: families, recreational athletes, as well as primary and secondary school students who wish to get to know the sport in a different, playful way.

Organised by the Curling Federation of Slovenia and Curling Club Maribor, with the support of the Municipality of Maribor, Sports Facilities Maribor and the Sports Association of Maribor, a presentation of curling, a winter Olympic sport, will take place on Saturday, 7 March 2026 at 14:00.

The event will be enriched by a VIP match featuring well-known media and sports personalities, and we will also reward the best visitors in the competition “Come and Try”. The three competitors who get closest to the centre of the curling house will receive professional curling brooms worth €150.

At the open day, visitors will:

  • learn the basic rules and course of the game,
  • watch a demonstration,
  • take part in the guided competition “Come and Try” (also suitable for complete beginners),
  • find out how they can join regular training sessions and activities in Maribor,
  • follow the VIP match.

No prior knowledge is required to participate; the organisers will provide basic instructions and a safe introduction to the sport.

A few words about the sport itself:
Curling is a sport that quickly captivates – as it is both tactical and fun, and can be played by people of very different ages. With the open day, we want to show the people of Maribor that curling is accessible and that it is best experienced directly on the ice. A key characteristic and value of this sport is ethics, which is particularly relevant in today’s times. Did you perhaps know that curling is the only sport where the one who wins buys a drink for the one who lost, so that everyone leaves the match with pleasant feelings? One team takes the victory, the other the drinks. Good company is what matters, and there is no shortage of it in curling.

For those who seek top-level challenges and perhaps one day wish to take part as a member of the Slovenian Olympic national team, attending the open day will be essential. At the event, instructors from the Curling Federation of Slovenia will present a sport that at first glance seems simple, but once visitors get to know it better, they will realise that due to its specific characteristics it is extremely demanding, as it takes place in challenging conditions and requires exceptional precision, anticipation skills, a strategic approach and coordinated teamwork from the players.
