Maribor Island

On Tuesday, 29 June, at 10 am, we invite you to Maribor Island for a presentation on the importance of the Drava River in the local context and the wider significance of the Danube Region in Europe.

The Drava River and its riparian area is a treasure trove of biodiversity and therefore one of the most important areas for nature conservation in Slovenia. The river’s flow creates a variety of habitats that alternate in a small space, but are also constantly changing due to the river’s action. The Drava River area is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000 and is a protected area and a nature conservation site.

Why do we mention the River Drava on 29 June, Danube Day?

The Danube and the area we call the Danube Region cover one third of the European continent. Today, the Danube is at the heart of Europe’s 35,000km-long network of inland waterways, with a total catchment area of 817,000 km2. Important tributaries such as the Inn, the Sava, the Tisza, the Drina, the Morava and many others, including of course the Drava, contribute to its rich hydrological catchment. Slovenia, one of the 15 signatories to the Danube Convention, is among the countries that have pledged to implement measures to protect the Danube.

On this Danube Day, the Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent., would like to draw attention to the importance of the Drava River as one of its tributaries, which plays an important role in the development of Maribor and offers opportunities for many activities, but which, as the most watery river in Slovenia, is also of great importance for the country as a whole. In the framework of the Danube River Day 2021 event, we will present projects and conceptual designs for Styria, Slovenia and the Danube Region with our partners the Regional Development Agency for the Podravje Region – Maribor, the Slovenian Nature Conservation Institute, Maribor OE and Drava Power Plants Maribor d.o.o. on Maribor Island.

After the presentation, we will organise a canoe trip from Maribor Island to the Harbour in cooperation with the Maribor Rafting Club. ALL INTERESTED PERSONS ARE INVITED TO REGISTER FOR THE CANOE RUN (at petra@epeka.si).

You are welcome!
