Maribor

We would like to inform you that we are closing the doors of the EPEKA Gallery. Here is the opening speech of the last exhibition “Pohorski pearls” by Luka Murovec.

2020 will go down in history as a very special year. For a small group of people, especially us, who gathered today at the last opening of Luka Murovec’s exhibition Pohorski pearls, and will remember this year for the end of a story, the story of the EPEKA Gallery. We started writing it together in 2013, when we got these beautiful premises at Koroška cesta 8 in Maribor. Since then, we have hosted numerous exhibitions, concerts and other cultural and educational events in our gallery.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, especially our artists and collaborators, and last but not least our funders; the Municipality of Maribor, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, the Youth Office, embassies and others who have supported us.

EPEKA Gallery was for us a place, a city, a space where we knew we belonged. It is very important for each of us to be able to identify, to orient ourselves, to return to the point where we started. In short, to have a home somewhere. But it is terrible when you realise that, despite all the effort, the sacrifice, the stress and the effort to achieve the best results, you are not and will never be accepted, no matter how hard you try. This is why EPEKA, Soc. Ent. focuses on people who have been denied a home for centuries and helps them to find it to the best of its ability. We at least had a temporary home here, but now we have lost it, and unfortunately some of us have not been lucky enough to find it all our lives.

Thank you all once again, and on behalf of EPEKA Gallery, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2021.
