29 October, 2016
EPEKA Gallery, Maribor
The Associaiton EPEKA, a social enterprise, invites you to the opening of the exhibition “CIRCUS” by painter Irena Orel on Saturday, 29 October 2016 at 8.16 pm at EPEKA Gallery, Koroška cesta 8 in Maribor.
The exhibition entitled “Circus” at first glance resembles the image of a real traditional circus, but at a second glance we notice that it is a change from animal motifs to human ones.
The exhibition is socially critical, it is not about what man can do to animals, but what man can do to man. It is a game of exchange. This time, the performing substance of the entertainment and fascination in the various forms of circus elements is the human being, with added animal qualities. We can also speak of a “modern circus”, which has parallels in today’s modern world. The exhibition seeks in the viewer a deeper reflection on the themes presented, and not only in the exploitation of observational pleasure and emotional shock.
Irena Orel has been fascinated by the subject of the circus since she was a young girl and saw her first circus show as a child. Later she used this theme several times in her paintings, drawings, photography… She has gradually reduced the animal world of the circus and has now completely replaced it with human figuration.
She is most fascinated by the figure of the clown, which she has characterised with a quote:
“A clown will always be a clown, even if he is sad.”
