On the occasion of the International Day of Humanitarianism, the Student Tolar Foundation, a foundation of the School of Education in Ljubljana, and the Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent., are launching a Call for Grants for Roma Students. On this occasion, we will organise a press conference where we will present the call and the related call documentation in more detail.

You are cordially invited to join us on Tuesday, 18 August, at 11:00 in Lecture Room 1 of the Student Campus (Pivovarniška ulica 6, Ljubljana). The guests of the press conference will be. Stane Baluh, Acting Director at the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Nationalities, Damjan Vinko, President of the Board of the Student Tolar Foundation, an institution of the School of Arts and Sciences in Ljubljana, Jerica Lorenci, assistant, Roma activator at the Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent.

The appeal aims to support members of the Roma community who decide to continue their formal education after high school and to motivate young Roma to choose higher education more often. In a moderated discussion, we will discuss ways to support the Roma community to become more actively involved in formal education systems beyond secondary education. The call for grants for Roma students will offer EUR 4,000. An individual person will be able to receive an amount of EUR 400 under the call.

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared 19 August as International Humanitarian Day. This day recalls the commitment of the international community to help vulnerable, overlooked and disadvantaged people around the world. The latter represents the humanitarian community’s enduring mission.

The Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent., has been working for many years in the field of empowerment of the Roma community, and with the additional financial incentive we want to motivate members of the Roma community to actively acquire formal education, which will give them the opportunity to increase their employment capacity.

The Student Tolar Foundation, a foundation of the School of Education in Ljubljana, is focused on providing assistance to students of the School of Education in Ljubljana in need. Their main activities include the provision of non-repayable financial and material aid, free psychosocial counselling and subsidised education for students in need, as well as efforts to improve the social situation of students. Currently, there is also a call for proposals for financial aid for student families and subsidised language and vocational courses, and in October a call for proposals will be published for non-repayable financial aid for students in social need at the Ljubljana School of Economics.
