Representatives of ESZ EPEKA, EPEKA Nepremičnine d.o.o., the EPEKA Youth Cooperative, and the EPEKA Association, so. p., will participate in the online World Habitat Awards ceremony, internationally recognised awards that highlight practical, innovative, and sustainable housing solutions from around the world.
The World Habitat Awards were established in 1985 by the Building and Social Housing Foundation as a contribution to the United Nations International Year of Shelter for the Homeless (1987). Each year, two awards are presented to projects from the Global South and the Global North that offer solutions with the potential to be transferred or adapted to other contexts.
Key criteria and focus of the awards
Housing projects and programmes are invited to apply if they:
- offer practical, innovative, and sustainable responses to contemporary housing challenges;
- are already being implemented or have been completed (not merely at the design stage);
- have the potential to be transferred or adapted in other countries;
- understand habitat in a broader sense and deliver additional benefits, such as:
- social inclusion and community empowerment,
- income generation,
- health-related impacts,
- capacity building and education,
- responses to the climate crisis.
EPEKA’s participation in this event represents an important opportunity to connect with international good practices, exchange knowledge, and strengthen our work in the field of cooperative, affordable, and sustainable housing, particularly in the context of social entrepreneurship and support for vulnerable groups.
The contribution also reaffirms EPEKA’s commitment to developing holistic housing solutions that go beyond construction alone and incorporate community development, social justice, and long-term sustainability.
