The EPEKA project – a housing cooperative for all, addresses a housing problem that is currently one of the most widespread in Europe and beyond.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), housing costs are currently rising faster than incomes in most EU countries. This, combined with the energy crisis, gentrification in cities and the rise of rental housing for tourist purposes, has created a difficult situation that affects everyone.
However, if we focus on affordable housing for young people, this is a major problem that has affected them the most in Europe’s urban centres, especially in the capitals. This is why young adults in the EU continue to live with their parents, regardless of whether they are in employment, because they are paid too low a wage to be able to afford the expensive housing problem and the uncertainty about this is of a permanent nature.
Quote from Oliver Ropke, President of the European Economic and Social Committee: ‘Europe is in a housing crisis. We need to act now and act boldly.”

The solution we are addressing in the EPEKA project – a housing cooperative for all – is to solve the housing problem through housing cooperatives. Housing cooperatives already offer a suitable approach to solving the housing crisis, as they exist in many cities and regions across Europe. Housing cooperatives come in different shapes and sizes – some have just one building, owned jointly by a group of people. Why does this not work here?
The reasons are varied. We will discuss more about them in three days of activities on housing cooperatives with local and international experts via the ZOOM web app and live on the last day of the
Student Campus in Ljubljana.
The recommendations and proposals we will develop over these three days will be presented publicly at a conference on housing cooperatives on 22 May at EU House, which we will jointly organise with Community of Municipalities of Slovenia.
