Roma Pub is a project with which the Association EPEKA, Soc. Ent., coordinator, and partner Romano Pralipe Maribor Roma Association, aims to establish a model example of the first Roma pub in Maribor, Slovenia and the EU.

The Romani café will operate according to the principle of social entrepreneurship with the aim of employing people from vulnerable groups – the Roma minority – and if the restaurant makes a profit, it will be accumulated for the establishment of new restaurants with the aim of employing even more Roma men and women.

The Roma restaurant project will have several effects:

  • Revival of forgotten and preservation of Roma culture (art, cuisine, Roma style of decoration, language, etc.).
  • Motivate and involve Roma to employment and to get acquainted with social entrepreneurship.
  • To train in an informal way the Roma involved to work in the restaurant.
  • To integrate Roma into society and the working environment in order to promote intercultural dialogue.
  • To gain experience in the field of education of ethnic minorities for teachers and trainers.
  • Increasing the self-esteem of Roma.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles among Roma and the rest of the population.
  • Reduce prejudices and stereotypes about Roma in the majority population.
  • It will increase the social responsibility of the population and promote the development of the region.
  • Increase gender equality for the ethnic minority in Slovenia.
  • Spread knowledge among Roma and encourage the method of learning to learn among members of the Roma community.

The European Union’s orientation in the current economic crisis affecting our lives is to increase creativity, competition, employability and entrepreneurial spirit. The Roma Restaurant project has all these qualities. And, most importantly, it involves socially disadvantaged people and promotes the importance of social entrepreneurship. Which is crucial in today’s difficult times.
